The aims of the Zrenjanin Local Council include:
regional and cross-border cooperation, the reaffirmation of the idea of multiculturalism in Banat, building and strengthening an open civil society in the region, the development of private entrepreneurship, the promotion of the use of the local cultural and historical heritage. Their projects are implemented through education and training seminars for citizens, NGO activists, local government officials, businesspeople, as well as through research into the historical heritage of Banat and its multiculturalism.
Since 1998, the following key projects have been implemented:
"Banat Studies" (multicultural and media project on the Banat region and its history);
"Spiritual Music" (multi-confessional choirs);
"Communication Zone" (foreign language courses);
"Europe Day" (events to celebrate Europe Day, May 9).
In 2001, at the International South-East Europe NGO Fair in Timisoara, Romania, the Zrenjanin Local Council won the first prize with its Democracy Online project. In 2002, the Council was awarded at the same event, as the NGO with the best promotional material.
The most important projects and big actions, (over 100) implemented by the Zrenjanin Local Council, include:
"The Cultural Map of Banat" - the promotion of multiculturalism and historic sites in the Serbian and Romanian Banat. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Inter-Cultural Institute from Timisoara.
"Integrated Network of Cross-border Cooperation Serbia/Romania" - the promotion of SME development in cross-border regions. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Timisoara-based Agency for Regional development "ADETIM".
"Serbia + EU = 100 Whys? & 100 Becauses" - a local newspaper column and responses to questions regarding Serbia's EU integration process.
The Council participated in the following projects:
"Serbia in the EU! What is in it for me, and what is in it for my city" and the "National Convention on the EU in Serbia", 2009;
"Prerogatives for Media Pluralism" - media forum in cooperation with the Konrad Adenaure Foundation;
"Training Trainers in Project Management" - for the employees of the AP Vojvodina;
"Civic Activism" - training, an introduction to the civil sector for young people;
"It Rings for Europe" - a project for secondary school students in Zrenjanin;
"Culture Market" - participation in the promotion of Zrenjanin's candidature for the 2020 European Capital of Culture;
The promotion of a monograph, the result of 10 years of research activities and translation work by the Zrenjanin Local Council. The author is Mr. Nikola Šlajh, M.A, president of the European Movement, Zrenjanin Local Council.
